Sri Bhubaneswar Ksetra
Lord Sivaji and the Holy Dhama of Bhubaneswar

A lecture given from the Caitanya-caritamrta Adi-lila 7.157,
recorded on the 25 April 1991 in Bhubaneswar, India

Lord Siva

We should not disrespect the demigods. Though the demigods are not the Supreme Lord, they are the servants of Krsna. Mahaprabhu has taught like this. Especially Sivaji, vaisnavanam yatha sambhu, [SB 12.13.16] Lord Siva is a great Vaisnava. Therefore Mahaprabhu visited, paid respect to Sivaji in Bhubaneswar.

Lord Siva Guards the Ksetras

Sivaji is known as ksetrapala. In Vraja Mandala you’ll find nine ksetrapala Mahadeva murtis are there. In Vrndavan you’ll find Gopesvara Mahadeva, in Kamyavan you’ll find Kamesvara Mahadeva, in Govardhan, you’ll find Chakresvara Mahadeva, in Nadagram you’ll find Nandisvara Mahadeva and in Mathura you’ll find Bhutesvara, Gokarnesvara, Chaklesvara, Brdhyesvara and Rangesvara. Besides that, in Mathura many, many Siva temples are there.

In the Adi Varaha Purana it is mentioned that Visnu said to Siviji, Visnu has ordered Sivaji, "In Mathura you’ll become ksetrapala, one who guards the ksetra, My ksetra. If someone will pay You respect and have Your darsana, he’ll get the result of visiting My ksetra. Those who circumambulate Vrndavana or do Vrndavana parikrama and at the beginning and end visit Bhutesvara Siva in Mathura, because ‘vaisnavanam yatha sambhu,’ Siva is a great vaisnava, do you understand?

Sriman Mahaprabhu in Bhubaneswar

Lord CaitanyaBhubaneswar is also Sivaji’s dhama. Here this Bhubaneswar Ksetra is also Sivaji’s dhama. It is mentioned in the Caitanya Bhagavata, Vrndavan Dasa Thakura has given a description of Bhubaneswar. When Mahaprabhu came here, on His way to Jagannatha Puri dhama, He passed through Bhubaneswar. Mahaprabhu visited the Lingaraja temple because the Bhubaneswar Lingaraja is a very dear servant of Anantadeva and it was for that reason that Mahaprabhu came here.

In Caitanya-Bhagavata, it is mentioned, that Mahaprabhu with His devotees came here to Bhubaneswar. They chanted and danced before Siva in the Bhubaneswar Lingaraja Temple. So following in the footsteps of Mahaprabhu all vaisnavas come and visit Bhubaneswar Sivaji and chant and dance here.

Lord Siva Obtains Sri Bhubaneswar Dhama
From Lord Krsna

Lord Siva and Lord VisnuIn Skanda Purana it is mentions this ksetra, Bhubaneswar Ksetra. “Once in Kasi, there was a king who was a great devotee of Lord Siva, but his desires were unfulfilled. That king underwent very severe penances to conquer Krsna. He was in tapasya trying to satisfy Lord Siva as he had that desire that he would conquer Krsna. One cannot understand the behavior of a vaisnava. Even the demigods can not understand, what to speak of the human beings. Sivaji became satisfied and pleased with his tapasya. At that time Sivaji told him, "Alright you go and fight against Krsna, I’m following you, I’ll support you, I’ll help you."

So that king then started for battle and Siva with all his followers followed behind the raja, king. Then Krsna, Vasudeva, Devaki-nandana, Son of Devaki, could understand these things, so He released His Sudarsana Cakra. That Sudarsana Cakra cut off the head of the king. After that Sudarsana Cakra cut off the heads of all the Siva bhaktas in Kasi. This Varnasi became a crematorium ground - all were dead. So Siva became very angry and released his Pasupatastra. But what he’ll do, Pasupatastra is no match in front of Sundarsana Cakra. It could not do anything. So at last, Siva also became very terrified, frightened and tried to run away, but where will He go?

Then Siva could understand except for Krsna nobody can save me now. So He surrendered unto the lotus feet of Krsna, Govinda. He offered many prayers. Siva says, “O Lord of my heart, I have one prayer. I am always very puffed up. I have great false ego, but now I understand I can not leave You, I can not stay anywhere else, please tell me where I shall stay.” This is described in the Skanda Purana.

So Vasudeva said, "My ksetra is there, Sri Purosottama Ksetra. So in the North of that ksetra is Ekamra Kanana. That place, Ekamra Kanana is very, very auspicious and will give bhukti and mukti, a very beautiful place. So you’ll stay there and you’ll be known as “Bhubaneswar.” “So I give you that Ekamra Kanana. You go and stay there and become the guard of that ksetra, ‘ksetra pala’."

So this is Bhubaneswar. It is also known as ‘Hemacala’ and ‘Svarnadi Ksetra.' In this ksetra crores, crores, koti lingum crores of Sivajis are here. It is also known as asta-tirtha, the famous eight tirthas reside here. Bhubaneswar is superior to Varnasi and is more dear to Siva than Varnasi.

Srila Vyasadeva Glorifies Sri Bhubaneswar Dhama

Goddess ParvatiIn the Svarnadi-mahadeva-grantha, we’ll find that once Vyasadeva came here to Bhubaneswar. This is known as vaisnava-ksetra, Ekamra Kanana. Srila Vyasadeva has described its glories in the Svarnadi-mahadeva-grantha.

There it is mentioned once Devi Bhagavati, the Goddess Parvati, was hearing the glories of this Ekamra Kanana from the lips of Siva, Sambhu. So Bhagavati Devi came here to see this ksetra. She saw the maha-linga. Do you understand ‘linga’? Siva is worshipped in the linga form. And that linga has the complexion of half white and half black, sitasita varna maha-linga. Devi also offered puja to that linga. Once Devi saw that from a nearby lake hundreds of cows were coming out and they were pouring milk from their udders onto that maha-linga, circumambulating that maha-linga and then going away. Devi saw this thing.

Another day she also saw the same thing. Then Devi assumed the form of a gopalini, a cowherd girl, and followed those cows. At that time there were two demon brothers named Kriti and Vasa. They were very much enchanted by the beauty of Parvati Devi, so they approached her and expressed their desire that they wanted to have her as their wife. So Bhagavati Devi disappeared from that place and went to Siva and narrated everything before her Lord. Siva then assumed the form of a gopa, a cowherd boy, and went there. Then Lord Siva could understand the history of those two demons.

Siva revealed to Devi that those two demons Kriti and Vasa were the sons of Drumilla Raksasa. Drumilla worshipped many demigods, they were very much pleased with him and gave him one boon: 'that his two sons couldn’t be killed by any weapon.' Then Sivaji said, “Now they will be killed by you, O Devi. You will kill them. They cannot be killed by any weapons so I can’t kill them.”

So getting this instruction from Sivaji, Devi, in the form of a cowherd girl, gopalini, appeared in front of those two demons and said, “Alright, I’ll fulfill your desires, but I have one condition, if one of you will carry me on your shoulder or head I will be his wife.”

Bhagavati Devi manifested her potency and placed one of her feet on the shoulder of one demon, and the other on the shoulder of the other demon and crushed them. They were killed. Bhagavati had assumed the form of Visvambari, Visvambari-rupa. Visnu means universe, she had expanded herself as Visvambari her universal form and crushed them. So from this day, Lord Sambhu, vaisnava pravara sambhu and Devi Bhagavati stayed here in this ksetra, Ekamra Kanana.

Bindhu-Sarovara & Sri Ananta Vasudeva

Lord Siva and Mother ParvatiAfter killing these two demons Kriti and Vasa, Bhagavati Devi became very tired and was also very thirsty. She wanted some water. So Siva with His trident, Trishula pierced a hill top and created a great well that is known as Sankar Vampi. But Devi said, “I want water from a great tank, a sarovara, pond, which will remain here eternally.” So Sivaji ordered his bull carrier, Nandi, to install that sarovara. All the tirthas and holy rivers came there like the Kaveri, Gomati, Krishna, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Gandaki, Rishikulya, Mahanadi. All holy rivers came to this sarovara. These came from the heavenly planets. The rivers that came from Patala, are: the Mandakini and Ksirodaka. When Siva saw that all these holy rivers had come, with his trident he pierced that hilltop and asked all those holy rivers and all the tirthas to please pour water drop by drop here. [Bindu means drop]. So they did so andthen Lord Brahma installed that sarovara. That sarovara is known as Bindhu-sarovara. Have you seen it?

Mahaprabhu took bath in that Bindhu-sarovara. Bhagavan Janardan and all the demigods headed by Brahma all took bath in that sarovara. So in this way Bindhu-sarovara was installed.

Bindu Sarovara Then Sambhu paid obeisances to Janardana and the Lord placed Anantadeva on the eastern side of Bindhu-sarova. You’ll find on the eastern side Sri Ananta Vasudeva is there. Siva became the ksetrapala, and Anantadeva became the controller of the ksetra. Here Anantadev stays with His Sister, Srimati Subadhra Devi. He is known as Lord Vasudeva fulfills Lord Siva’s desires. To fulfill Lord Siva’s desires Ananta Vasudeva stayed on the eastern side of Bindhu-sarovara and has been staying there till now. Have you gone to that temple? In the front wall of that temple you’ll find Laksmi Devi and Sudarsana Cakra are also there.

Ananta Vasudeva and Madan Mohan are the Lords of Lingaraj Siva. So at the time of Chandan Yatra, Sivaji along with Ananta Vasudeva and Madan Mohan ride a swing, dola and participate in Chandan Yatra. They perform Candana Yatra in Bindhu-sarovara.

When a Vaisnava is Served, Krishna is Worshipped

Lord SivaAt that time Candana Yatra will also begin at the Puri Temple. In Puri there are three famous Lord Sivas, who also come with Madan Mohana to do Candan Yatra. The Madan Mohan here in Bhubaneswar is a four handed form. In Ananta Vasudeva mandir vaisnavi Bhagavati herself cooks bhoga for Ananta Vasudeva. First Ananta Vasudeva will be worshipped; bhoga arati will be performed, then this prasada will go to the Siva temple. Siva is always in need of that prasad from Ananta Vasudeva. Sivaji becomes very pleased. This is the vaisnava process. The vaisnava will first worship Lord Visnu, then he’ll offer that prasad to Sivaji. In this way a vaisnava worships Siva, but if one is not a vaisnava then he’ll offer that bhoga to Siva directly. In this way a vaisnava worships Siva, but if one is not a vaisnava then he’ll directly worship Siva. Therefore a vaisnava never accepts prasad offered directly to Lord Siva.

The vaisnava will first worship Vasudeva, Visnu by offering Him bhoga then that prasad will be offered to Lord Siva. This system is going on in the Sri Jagannatha Temple. In the Jaganntha Temple campus you’ll find Goddess Durga is there, Siva is there, Laksmiji is there, all are there so Jaganntha prasad is given to them. The bhoga is not given to Siva directly. That’s the vaisnava process, so we accept it.

Ananta Vasudeva Temple Bhubaneswar

If someone takes bath in the Bindhu-sarovara then he’ll get the result of taking bath in all tirthas, because all the tirthas are present there. If someone goes to Ananta Vasudeva Temple and gets darsan of Ananta Vasudeva then he gets the result of darsan of the Supreme Lord. So Siva by the order and mercy of Janardana has become the ksetrapala. Siva is bhakti-pradatah, a great vaisnava so he can give you bhakti if he is pleased and simultaneously he can give you the adhikar to serve the dham of the Lord. Lord Siva simutaneously can give you dhama-seva-adhikara and bhakti-pradatah. Siva can give you. Therefore the vaisnavas go to the temple of Sivaji because Mahaprabhu has also gone there and taught like this. We follow in the footsteps of Mahaprabhu. The vaisnavas, gaura-priya-janas, the dear devotees of Gauranga Mahaprabhu also visit Siva temples and pay respects to Siva and pray for the mercy of Siva to let us get Krsna-bhakti. Therefore Mahaprabhu visited the Bhubaneswar temple. Siva is a vaisnava, ‘vaisnava-sevana krsna-pujana’, if a vaisnava is served then Krsna is worshipped. That is Mahaprabhu’s instruction. So Mahaprabhu did that in order to teach us.

Srimad Bhagavatam First Spoken in Bhubaneswar by Lord Siva

Ekamra Kanana

Lord Siva and ParvatiThe Srimad-Bhagavatam was first spoken in Bhubaneswar, Ekamra Kanana. Sivaji was speaking to Paravti Devi. Sivaji says:

aham vedmi suko vetti
vyaso vetti na vetti va
bhaktya bhagavatam grahyam
na buddhya na ca tikaya

[CC. Mad. 24.313]

“[Lord Siva said:] ‘I may know; Sukadeva Gosvami, the son of Vyasadeva, may know; and Vyasadeva may know or may not know Srimad-Bhagavatam. On the whole, Srimad-Bhagavatam, the spotless Purana, can be learned only through devotional service, not by material intelligence, speculative methods or imaginary commentaries.’”

“I know Bhagavata Sukadeva knows, I don’t know if Vyasadeva knows or not.” Bhagavata can only be understood by bhakti.

Sivaji was speaking Srimad-Bhagavatam before Goddess Paravati here in Ekamra Kanana. At that time, a parrot was listening, suka means parrot. So at first Parvati Devi was listening and was saying “Hmm. Hmm, hmm. Then Parvati Devi fell asleep. That parrot was listening and saying “Hmm, hmm, hmm.” So Sivaji couldn’t understand at first that Parvati Devi had fallen asleep then at last He noticed. So he thought who has been saying, “Hmm, hmm, hmm.” He saw a parrot sitting there so Sivaji ran to catch the parrot but the parrot flew away. That suka then entered into the womb of Srila Vyasadeva’s wife. That parrot became Srila Sukadeva Goswami. This is how Sukadeva Goswami knows the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Bhubaneswar is such a famous place. It is known as Bhubaneswar-dhama, Bhubaneswar-ksetra. This is vaisnava-ksetra.

Srimad Bhagavatam

Srimati Radharani's ParrotSrimad Bhagavatam speaks pure bhagavata-dharma-tattva. It condems kaitava-dharma, projjhita-kaitava, cheating  dharma. What is cheating dharma?  There are four types of cheating dharma: dharma, artha, kama, moksa. These are all cheating dharmas. The Bhagavata condemns cheating dharma and establishes pure Bhagavata-dharma. Who understands this Bhagavata-dharma-tattva? Paramo nirmatsaranam satam vedyam vastavam atra vastu sivadam [SB 1.1.2] Vaisnavas, devotees who are paramo nirmatsaranam satam, who are not envious, only they can understand this bhagavata-dharma-tattva. Vedyam vastavam atra vastu sivadam, it speaks of vastu, supreme reality. That is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna.

Sivadam is all auspious. Siva means auspicous. If someone daily hears Srimad Bhagavatam, he will be free from the affliction of the three tapas; adhyatmika, adhibhautika, adhidaivika. No more affliction will be there. Why are you afflicted?

dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra paramo nirmatsaranam satam
vedyam vastavam atra vastu sivadam
tapa-trayonmulanam
srimad-bhagavate maha-muni-krte kim va parair isvarah
sadyo hrdy avarudhyate 'tra krtibhih susrusubhis tat-ksanat

[SB 1.1.2]

“Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhagavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyasadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.”

If somebody develops the desire, "I'll just go and hear Srimad Bhagavatam," immediately the Supreme Lord who is there in the heart becomes awakened. What to speak of those who comes daily and hear the Bhagavatam, nitya bhagavata seviya from a bone fide authority, bhakta-bhagavata that is a dear devotee of  Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is an embodiment of Bhagavata. Then he will be able to bind up the Supreme Lord with the rope of love, in his heart. This is the effect of hearing Srimad Bhagavatam. What is Srimad Bhagavatam?

nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam
suka-mukhad amrta-drava-samyutam
pibata bhagavatam rasam alayam
muhur aho rasika bhuvi bhavukah

[SB 1. 1.12]

“O expert and thoughtful men, relish Srimad-Bhagavatam, the mature fruit of the desire tree of Vedic literatures. It emanated from the lips of Sri Sukadeva Gosvami. Therefore this fruit has become even more tasteful, although its nectarean juice was already relishable for all, including liberated souls.”

This is the most ripened, sweetest, nectarean juicy fruit of the Vedic tree, nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam. It has now fallen here, such nectarean, juicy fruit of the Vedic tree, Srimad Bhagavatam.

Srimati Radharani's Parrot

Suka the ParrotHere it has come out from the lips of Sukadeva Goswami. Suka means Parrot. Generally, the parrot puts his beak into this fruit which is very, very ripe and sweet. When it is touched by the parrot, it becomes even more sweeter. So this Srimad Bhagavatam is the most ripened, sweetest, nectarean juicy fruit of the Vedic tree. Sukadeva Goswami is Radharani's parrot, Sri Suka. The Bhagavatam says, "sri suka uvaca." Sri means Radharani's parrot, Sukadeva Goswami. When it came out from the lips of Sukadeva Goswami it became much sweeter like the parrot putting its beak into the ripe mango.

Srimati Radharani's ParrotWhen Radha and Krsna were performing Their pastimes here five thousand years ago, Radharani's parrot was with Her. That parrot used to sit on the palm of Radharani's left hand. Radharani used to feed him the seeds of pomegranates. She used to feed him! And always Radharani was singing Krsna's name and glorifying Krsna. Her parrot was hearing everything and it was his life and soul.

When Radharani and Krsna wound up Their lila and went back to their eternal abode in Goloka Vrndavan, aprakata-lila, [unmanifest lila] They left the parrot here. Radharani told the parrot, "You stay here and speak the Bhagavatam." They ordered Her parrot to stay here.

So the life and soul of Her parrot was Bhagavata-katha, Krsna-katha.  Everyday Radharani was speaking and glorifying Krsna, Krsna-katha, while Her parrot listened. Hearing was his life and soul. When Radha and Krsna left, the parrot felt restless. "Where is my life, where is my Krsna-katha?  Where is bhagavata-katha? Otherwise how can I survive?" The parrot was very restless.

Lord Sivaji Speaks the Srimad Bhagavatam

Mango TreeThen he heard Sivaji was speaking the Bhagavatam in his abode, Kailasa-dhama. Bhubaneswar is also Sivaji's abode, yes. It is Sivaji's second Kasi. It is said divya-kasi-bhubaneswar, Sivaji's abode. It is also known as Ekamra-kanana. In ancient days here in Bhubaneswar there was one mango tree. A very big, straight and wide spread mango tree. It was so large that the entire area was covered with that mango tree and therefore the place is known as Ekamra-ksetra, the place of one mango tree. Eka means one and amra means mango. So Bhubaneswar is known as Ekamra-ksetra. Sivaji was speaking the Srimad Bhagavatam there. Srimad Bhagavatam was first spoken here in Bhubaneswar, in Sivaji's abode of Ekamra-kanana.

Lord Siva and Parvati One day Sivaji's wife, Parvati Devi requested Sivaji, "Please speak Bhagavatam, I want to hear." Parvati Devi became interested so Sivaji said, "Alright, I'll speak only to you, nobody else can hear it." It is such nectarean, sweet mellow.

One who has developed taste for the Srimad Bhagavatam, only he can hear it. Otherwise how can one taste it. This mellow, Bhagavata-rasa can only be relished by rasika-bhaktas. It is much more relishable in the association of the rasika-bhaktas, otherwise the mellow will not come out. No nectar will come out, only water. If you cannot relish, then the mellow will never come out, only plain water, salty water, not sweet water.

Lord SivaSo Sivaji drove out everybody from Ekamra-kanana. Nobody will be there in that ksetra, only Parvati will hear. So that's when the parrot flew there and sat in one of the branches of the mango tree. Sivaji was speaking and Parvati was hearing. Parvati was interested in hearing the vraja-lila-kahani of the tenth canto. Sivaji started from the first canto. Parvati thought, 'Oh first canto is being spoken now, the tenth canto is so far away.' So at the beginning Sivaji was just speaking and Parvati was hearing and saying, "Mmm hmm hmm." After some time Parvati fell asleep and she thought, 'When the tenth canto comes I will wake up!'  So Parvati fell asleep.

Parrot in mango treeThe parrot was hearing but when Parvati fell asleep he was now saying, "Hmm hmm hmm." So for some time Sivaji noticed that Parvati had already fallen asleep. "So who is saying, Hhmm hmm hmm?" And then he saw, "Oh yes! The parrot is sitting there and hearing. Oh yes, the parrot is sitting there in the mango tree. He is hearing the Bhagavatam from me. I drove everybody out. Who is this parrot that is hearing Srimad Bhagavatam?" Sivaji became angry, stood up with his trident and tried to drive him out. The parrot flew away and Sivaji was running behind him to kill him. "I must kill him."

Sri Sukadeva Goswami

Srila Sukadeva Goswami and sri Pariksit MaharajaThe parrot flew to the Badrikasrama. Samyaprasa asrama is near Badrikasrama, Vyasadeva was there. Vysadeva was speaking Srimad Bhagavatam to his wife, Vitika. Vysadeva's wife was hearing with an open mouth saying, "Ahh! Ahh!" The parrot flew inside her mouth and went into her womb and remained there.

Later the parrot came out as Sukadeva Goswami. Therefore this Sri Suka is Srimate Radharani's parrot. Otherwise who can speak Bhagavatam? It is said, suka-mukhad amrta-drava-samyutam.

Then Vyasadeva saw Sivaji was running towards him, very angry. Vyasadeva asked Sivaji, "Why are you angry?" Sivaji replied, "Why are you speaking Bhagavatam to that parrot? I intended nobody should hear, only Parvati should hear. So I must kill him"

Srila Vyasadeva's pregnant wifeVyasadeva said, "Why will you kill him? If somebody hears the Bhagavatam which is amrta, such sweet, nectarean mellow, what will happen to one who has tasted the nectar? He becomes immortal. How can you kill him? Be pacified, be pacified." So Sivaji became pacified. That parrot remained in the womb of Vyasadeva's wife for many years and later came out as Sukadeva Goswami. Suka-mukhad amrta, Srimad Bhagavatam came out of the mouth of Sukadeva Goswami. The Bhagavatam came out much sweeter. So we recite daily, again and again to rasika-bhaktas, "Please come, please come and taste such nectarean, mellow. It is supplied here."

How many are coming? Maybe you can count a handful, a few. Why so few? Why they are not coming? They have not developed a taste for this sweet nectarean mellow. They have developed taste for liquor. They are varasikas so many are going to the liquor shop. They are putting up big, big sign boards: "Cold wine, day and night, twenty-four hours open, come drink, dance and dine." Big, big signboards are there and many are going there for drink, dance and dining. So varasikas cannot come and hear Bhagavatam. We invite rasikas to come, again and again we invite them to come and taste it.

Daily Hear Srimad Bhagavatam from the Right Source

That is what Sivaji has said, "Who knows the Bhagavatam?

aham vedmi suko vetti
vyaso vetti na vetti va
bhaktya bhagavatam grahyam
na buddhya na ca tikaya

[CC. Mad.

Sukadeva Goswami knows because when Sivaji was speaking the parrot was hearing. I don't know whether Vyasadeva knows or not. Bhaktya bhagavatam grahyam na buddhya na ca tikaya, only by bhakti one can understand the Bhagavatam. No-one can understand the Bhagavatam by dint of his material scholarship, learning, intelligence, merit, or by taking help of the commentaries given by many, many commentators because the Bhagavatam is non-different from Krsna.

nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam

"O expert and thoughtful men, relish Srimad-Bhagavatam, the mature fruit of the desire tree of Vedic literatures. It emanated from the lips of Sri Sukadeva Gosvami. Therefore this fruit has become even more tasteful, although its nectarean juice was already relishable for all, including liberated souls."

Only by hearing Srimad Bhagavatam from the right source, bhakta-bhagavata, one will be able to develop Krsna-bhakti very easily.

[SB 1.7.7]

"Simply by giving aural reception to this Vedic literature, the feeling for loving devotional service to Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, sprouts up at once to extinguish the fire of lamentation, illusion and fearfulness."

When Krsna-bhakti has been developed fully, all your lamentations, delusions and fears are gone forever. Only hear Srimad Bhagavatam from the right source, daily. Drink this and taste the nectarean mellow. All your material lamentations and fears will be gone forever, finished.

[SB 12.13.18]

"Srimad-Bhagavatam is the spotless Purana. It is most dear to the Vaisnavas because it describes the pure and supreme knowledge of the paramahamsas. This Bhagavatam reveals the means for becoming free from all material work, together with the processes of transcendental knowledge, renunciation and devotion. Anyone who seriously tries to understand Srimad-Bhagavatam, who properly hears and chants it with devotion, becomes completely liberated."

Bhagavatam is the spotless Purana and is very dear to the Vaisnavas, yad vaisnavanam priyam. A real Vaisnava tastes the mellow from the Srimad Bhagavatam. One must hear and study the Srimad Bhagavatam under the guidance of a vaisnava, a bona fide representative of the Supreme Lord who is a bhakta-bhagavata, hearing from a premi-bhakta. By hearing Bhagavata, reading Bhagavata, deliberating on Bhagavata, one very easily develops bhakti, bhaktya. Therefore he is very easily delivered.

“The meaning of the Vedanta-sutra is present in Srimad-Bhagavatam. The full purport of the Mahabharata is also there. The commentary of the Brahma-gayatri is also there and fully expanded with all Vedic knowledge. ”[Garuda Purana, text 143, cited Cc. Mad. 25.113 and Hari-bhakti-vilasa 10.394]

There are four things elaborately discussed in the Srimad Bhagavatam. Number one is the Brahma-sutra bhasya, a natural commentry of the Brahma-sutra. Vyasadeva is the compiler of Brahma-sutra and he gave the natural commentary which is Srimad Bhagavatam. Number two is bharatartha-vinirnayah, the purport of Mahabharata is described here. Number three is gayatri-bhasya, a commentry on the gayatri mantra.

gayatrira arthe ei grantha-arambhana
“satyam param“-sambandha, “dhimahi“-sadhana-prayojana

[CC. Mad. 25.147]

“In the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam there is an explanation of the Brahma-gayatri mantra. ‘The Absolute Truth [satyam param]’ indicates the relationship, and ‘we meditate [dhimahi] on Him’ indicates the execution of devotional service and the ultimate goal of life."

Srimad Bhagavatam begins with gayatri-mantra and its commentary, satyam param dhimahi, [SB 1.1.1]. Number four is vedartha-paribrmhitah, Srimad Bhagavatam has expanded the meaning, purport of all the Vedas.

And These four things are here in Srimad Bhagavatam.

sarva-vedetihasanam
saram saram samuddhrtam

[SB. 1.3.41]

“The essence of all Vedic literature and all histories has been collected in Srimad-Bhagavatam."

sarva-vedanta-saram hi
sri-bhagavatam isyate
tad-rasamrta-trptasya
nanyatra syad ratih kvacit
[SB. 12.13.15]

Srimad-Bhagavatam is declared to be the essence of all Vedanta philosophy. One who has felt satisfaction from its nectarean mellow will never be attracted to any other literature."

One who has developed taste for this Srimad Bhagavatam will never aspire for any other sastra because the essence of all  Vedic literature is there. Such nectarean juice is there in the Srimad Bhagavatam. You must know what are the glories of Bhagavatam otherwise how will you develop taste for it and be interested, especially in this Kali yuga.

In this Kali yuga this Bhagavatam will appear like an effulgent sun. Jiva Goswami Prabhu has said like this. This Bhagavatam is puranam na tu sastrantara tulyam. Jiva Goswami has said in the Bhagavat-sandarbha. Srimad Bhagavatam is not like any ordinary sastra. This is Sri Krsna prati. This is the representative of Sri Krsna. Krsna-tulya bhagavata vibhu, Srimad Bhagavatam is as good as Krsna. Therefore this Bhagavata Maha Purana is not equal with other Vedic literature headed by Mahabharata. This is Krsna's representative. It is as good as Krsna in His vani incarnation.

Sukadeva Goswami says to Sunaka Rsis, "This Bhagavata Mahapurana is the flow of bhakti, bhakti-rasa-sastra. One who hears Srimad Bhagavatam from the right, authorised source will develop prema-bhakti, thereby it will give pleasure to Krsna.

kalau-vyala-mukhalidha-jagat-trana-vidhayakam
srimad bhagavatam sastram kalau kirena bhasitam

e tasmad aparam kincin manah-suddhi-karam na hi
janmantara-krtaih punyaih labhyate sadhubhis tu tat

[Padma Purana 6.193.13-14]

“Sri Sukadeva Goswami recited Srimad Bhagavatam in Kali-yuga to deliver the living entities that are being devoured by the snake of death. Nothing else purifies the mind like Srimad Bhagavatam. However, Srimad Bhagavatam is only attained by saintly persons through pious activities performed over many lifetimes."

In this Kali yuga, this is most degraded age most sinful age, this is like a fearful snake, devouring everybody. Therefore all are afraid of such a fearful snake as this Kali yuga. In order to drive out such fears Sukadeva Goswami spoke the Bhagavata. Soka-moha-bhayapaha [SB 1.7.7] by hearing Srimad Bhagavatam all your fears and lamentations are gone forever. One will become fearless. When Pariksit Maharaja heard he became fearless. What did he say? "Let hundreds and thousands of taksakat [snake birds] come and bite me I am not afraid." He says like that because he has become fearless.

So if we hear Srimad Bhagavatam you will become purified. Your heart will be purified, your mind will be purified. This is provided you hear from right source, from a bhakta-bhagavata, no other means is there to purify your consciousness, your heart and mind in Kali yuga. If someone has acquired a great deal of sukrti from previous births he obtains the book Bhagavata. That is the result of great sukrti.

Lord Siva’s Invitation to Srila Prabhupada

An evening darsan recorded in 1992 in Bhubaneswar, India

Lord Siva…You see that Mango grove there? When I first came here to erect this hut, I stayed there. There was nothing here. It was all dark. No electricity, no residence, it was all jungle. There was a very small mud hut here. I was staying alone, writing by lantern at night, chanting Hare Krsna and cooking my own food. I stayed there in that solitary place. There were many, many ghosts. When I chanted Hare Krsna, all fled. Notice, there are now some houses, but this was all a solitary place then, the whole area. If you chant Hare Krsna, the Krsna is there. When Krsna is there, then gradually everything will be there. One day, my Guru Maharaja came here, when it was still a jungle. For the first time I had brought electricity and one water pipe to that hut. My Guru Maharaja stayed in that mud hut for sixteen days. He did not go to the Government Guesthouse I had arranged; he refused, ‘No, no, I won’t go, I’ll stay here.’ There was nothing here, but he chanted Hare Krsna and spoke krsna-katha for sixteen days. Many people came. This land became purified. Sadhu came, and the land became tirtha. So from that day it began to develop. At this time also, my Guru Maharaja said that this would be the center of the city, now it has become so, you see? He had such foresight, he could see.

A plot of land becomes very, very glorified if a sadhu stays there, glorified land. Vasundhara dhanya, janani krtartha, the mother who has given birth to such a sadhu, who has carried such a sadhu within her womb, is a real mother. In contrast, others are like hogs, producing children who only eat stool. So if you produce children who eat stool, you are a hog, not a mother. Produce a sadhu, carry a sadhu in your womb, then your motherhood is perfect.

I was saying, how in Mayapur, Lord Siva invited my Guru Maharaja, ‘Please come, please come to this ksetra.’ My Guru Maharaja had developed some sort of sulkiness, so he was not intending to come here. Lord Siva, who is a great Vaisnava says:

panca-bhautika-deha ye
martya-loka-nivasinah
bhagavad-bhakti-rasika
namasya madr samsada

‘The sadhu who has taken birth in this material world, in the body consisting of five gross elements, he is a very great devotee of the Lord. He is worshipped even by me. I worship such a person, I pay my respects to him.’ Siva says, ‘He is so dear; I am not so dear as he is dear.’ [Brhad-bhagavatamrta 1.3.54]

Srila Prabhupada in BBSRSo when my Guru Maharaja developed some sulkiness, he would not come here. Lord Siva repeatedly requested, ‘Please, O Bhaktivedanta Swami, please come, please come.’ At last he accepted Lord Siva’s request. So he came here to this Siva-ksetra, which is the entrance to the Purusottama Ksetra. So Bhaktivedanta Swami came to this place. He stayed at the entrance, and thought of building this Krsna-Balaram temple at the entrance of the ksetra.

Now this desire has taken shape, hasn’t it? Anyone who comes to enter this ksetra, he must first visit this temple of Bhuaneswar, ‘O nice temple here!’ First he must pass through the entrance, then he enters Sri Ksetra, the nabhi, the middle portion, and sees Jagannatha. At the entrance Lord Siva is welcoming you, ‘Come, come.’ Siva is welcoming you here. So Srila Prabhupada did not think of opening a temple at Jagannatha Puri, he first thought of building a temple at the entrance. ‘No, I’ll do that first, then the next thing is, Puri in the future.’ First the entrance, a nice gate, ‘See, nice ksetra, let me enter into it.’ This is the significance of Bhubaneswar.

To this place of pilgrimage, tirtha, dhama, Mahaprabhu came. When He came, He first entered here, He visited the Lingaraja temple – Lord Siva. He danced there, did kirtana, took bath in that Bindhu sarovara. He visited Lord Siva. Lord Siva is a great devotee, he is ksetra-pala – one who guards the ksetra. Before entering the ksetra, you must see ksetra-pala and receive his permission. ‘O Lord, please let me enter.’ ‘All right.’ So devotees are cordially invited, welcomed. Lord Siva with folded hands says, ‘Please come and see Jagannatha..’

All the history of this ksetra is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, in the Utkala-khanda; there is a special volume. Sri Ksetra, Jagannatha, there is everything about this ksetra. To circumambulate this Sri Ksetra, first you must approach Lord Siva. If you avoid Him, then you will commit an offence. Your dhama-vasaand parikrama will not be fruitful.

So this is a very famous ksetra. This climate is very nice. The water is very nice. Bhubaneswar water is very famous, this Kedara-Gaurai water. Srila Prabhupada took everyday the water here. He got some relief, so he stayed here so many days. Also, when he was very, very sick in Vrndavan during his last days, he asked for this water. We sent it to Vrndavan. We brought that water for him every day. Have you seen that place? It is in old Bhubaneswar, where the Lingaraja, the Lord Siva temple is. Many Siva temples are there, but Lingaraja is the biggest and the first temple. Kedaresvara is one of the lingas, and Gauri is his wife. Their temple is known as Kedara-Gauri. The water from the well there is very good for the stomach.

When I first came to Orissa, my Guru Maharaja sent me. I first went to Cuttack, then came here to old Bhubaneswar, where I stayed in two dharma-salas there; one week, one week. Very close to that Lingaraja temple. I came here on foot, such a long way I walked to find a place to stay, to see where to erect a hut, here on this land. You see, just in front of the mango grove, in another mud hut. Then I erected this mud hut. Its shape was not as it is now. Now it is nice looking. Originally the bricks were set up with mud, loose. In that room Prabhupada stayed sixteen days…”
